The MTEL Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure Certification is designed to ensure that only knowledgeable and skilled candidates can go on to seek careers within the Massachusetts public education system. MTEL Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure Certification
The MTEL certification has four sections, each covering different aspects of the educational system:
MTEL Communications and Literacy Skills Test: This test is divided into two sections, which test reading and writing. The reading test is built around multiple-choice questions, which test vocabulary, critical thinking, analysis of the writer’s intent, summarizing, and interpreting graphs. The writing section consists of multiple-choice questions, which assess the candidate’s ability with grammar, sentence construction, punctuation, capitalization and word usage. There is a further section of short-answer questions, and two written assignments, which assess the candidate’s skill in summarizing content and composition.
MTEL Academic Pre K-12 Subject Tests: This test consists of a number of multiple choice questions aimed at assessing the understanding, knowledge and proficiency of candidates in the full range of curricular subjects. There is also a general curriculum subsection, that tests basic skills in language, mathematics, the arts, history, science, social science and technology.
MTEL Vocational and Technical Literacy Skills Test: This test is divided into two sections, which assess the candidate’s language skills, in reading and writing. The reading section contains multiple-choice questions, whereas the writing subtest includes multiple-choice questions, a written composition and short-answer questions. The test assesses ability with grammar, vocabulary, outlining, summarizing, punctuation and language use.
MTEL Adult Basic Education Test: This includes multiple-choice questions and short answer responses that test knowledge and problem solving abilities. Tests are available in English language, English as a Second Language, art, mathematics, social sciences, history, and science.
