COMPASS Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System Exam Study Guide

The Compass Test is an untimed, computerized test that allows a college to assess ability in reading, writing, mathematics, essay-writing, and English as a Second Language. The test is aimed at new students, already accepted for an institution, and ensures that they have the ability to take certain courses.

There is no pass or fail in the COMPASS test, and it serves as a tool to establishing suitability for courses. Students can identify any shortcomings in knowledge and skills, long before the student embarks upon a long and extensive course. The institution and student can plot a course of study that is challenging, but not too difficult.

COMPASS Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System Test Structure

The COMPASS Test comprises three sections; mathematics, writing potential, and reading skills.

  • COMPASS Reading Skills: In this test, students are asked to read passages and answer questions.
  • COMPASS Writing Potential: This test consists of various writing-related and grammatical questions, and students and assessors mark the ability to use correct grammar, punctuation, spelling and vocabulary.
